The Christmas shopping is finished, with a week to go, and there have been a few lessons learned.

1. We have too much crap in this country, or at least this part of the country.  We have at least one of every genre of chain store and restaurant within half an hour of our house, so if you make a wrong turn, you're suddenly shopping.  There are the standard department stores, four or five different supermarkets, all of the chain restaurants--many of which are owned by the same parent company, a slew of dollar stores, and the wonder of the region, Potomac Mills Mall.  So much of it is crap.  Superficial, stuff-it-in-your-SUV/McMansion-and-never-use-it-again crap.

2.  Driving, once my favorite pastime, now is a very frustrating part of life.  And it's worse now when everyone is trying to get to a different store or housing development.  And it's not like walking is an alternative.  Distances are farther in the cold (yes, Fred, we have had some snow and ice), and crossing monster intersections where drivers run red lights with impunity is not fun.  I used to think of myself as a decent driver, but now I've noticed myself picking up some asinine driving habits, mostly out of frustration (stay the %&#*^@ out of the left lane if you're not going to go at least the speed limit).

Now, don't get me wrong, Virginia is a nice place, and I'm glad we moved down here from Central NY.  There are jobs here--if you don't have one it's your own damn fault.  The weather is much better--it only snows for a few months out of the year, and when it snows an inch, there's a chance it may be a day off from work.  There's a ton of history for anyone who's into that, and entertainment, too.  But for the reasons above, magnified as they are at this time of year, I can't wait until spring and summer when we can look farther south and west for a new place.

Well, it's officially cold here.  Cold as in 38° and clear, with the sunset blinding all the southbound drivers on the way home.  Blinding as in beautiful, brilliant, bright, not-warm-at-all.  The car, who doesn't like the cold despite being raised up north, starts to hesitate, especially in the morning when I've dawdled and am running late.  The talking people start going on about the temperature like it's a real news story, an invisible hurricane or something interesting.  I scoff, but after living here over a year, they're half right.  I've acclimated, and the difference from 78° and happy sunny a few short weeks ago really wakes me up.  Perhaps I should wear something more than the light spring jacket I usually have.

I'm trying to figure out all the ins and outs of this blog thing...there's more to it than I thought.  I'm mostly interested in this as a way to improve my writing, after about a 5 year hiatus.  Man, I used to do poetry, and essays, a few people thought they were pretty good (of course, back then the opinions that counted the most were those that came with a grade).

I also like the idea of catching up on what everyone else is doing...sometimes I wonder why I even have a cell phone.  I think I have it just so I can hope for a call from a future employer...perhaps I should send out some resumes to help the process along.  Ah, maybe tomorrow.

On a different topic, what do you say on Veteran's Day?  It's not like you exactly say "Happy Veteran's Day".  Is it a day for thanking veterans?  Or just giving them a little thought (or prayers if you do that)?  I think it's a very important holiday, but I'm not really sure how to treat it.  Mostly it's a day off from work.
